Suzi Blu Online Workshop…

I signed up for an online class with Suzi Blu called “Les Petit Dolls” and I wanted to share my two paintings from the class. These paintings are bit more froofy than I usually paint but I wanted to embrace the style and try something a little outside of my usual comfort zone.

I have been a fan of Suzi’s You Tube videos for a year or two now…she has these crazy videos on keeping an art journal and they have always been inspiring to me so when I came across her “ning” community and these workshops I knew I had to sign up. Now, I have taken a lot of workshops over the years and even a few online and I can say, you don’t always get your moneys worth…NOT the case here. Suzi charges something like $55.00 for this workshop and the information she shares and the quality of the vidoes are really amazing. You watch her create several of her pieces and she shares all of the materials she uses and shows you her techniques…

I love mixed media art so this was right up my alley and I really did learn a few new things like wood burning, using colored pencils on wood, applying wax to your finished painting, etc. Even if you aren’t into the whole doll thing, you can use these techniques in many other ways. The materials in these two paintings are wood substrate to paint on, wood burned image, colored pencil, acrylic paint, collage and beeswax. Thanks for looking

VBSPCA and my new 16-35mm f/2.8 L

I decided to try out my new lens while I was volunteering at the VBSPCA on Friday…it is nice and warm in there and unfortunately always plenty of subjects to photograph…Many of these animals are still up for adoption and need loving homes. If you live in the area and are looking for a new pet, check out the VBSPCA.

My first impression with the lens is…I like it. I bought it hoping to replace my beloved 10-20mm Sigma that I can no longer use since I have moved up to full frame. The new lens doesn’t seem quite as wide and the focusing has been a little tricky wide open, but I am sure I will get used to it…It is a good weight for me which is important on longer shoots and the build quality is typical of Canon L series lenses. Overall…I think it is going to be a keeper. Here are some images that I captured using the new lens…

Something fun to try and a drab winter day…

I got this email from Photojojo that shows you how to create your own 3D photos…I love anything that requires playing with either toy or cheap cameras so I may have to give this a try…I am not expecting stellar results, but it will be a fun way to spend an afternoon with my daughter on this grey dreary day…BTW, I am sooo bummed my Raven’s lost last night to the Steeler’s…anyone but the frickin’ Steeler’s…Go Cardinal’s.

New Acrylic Painting and Journal Pages

I have been wanting to work in my journal for weeks now so I finally took advantage of a free day and did two new pages…I have also wanted to work on a few new paintings where I am actually painting with acrylics instead of working on the computer with my pen and tablet. As much as I love painting on the computer, there is no replacing the feel of paint and a brush and the meditative process of actually pushing paint around on a canvas…This one is of a Boston Terrier and I did the painting on MDF board using acrylic paint. I usually paint with oils, but I have decided I need to learn acrylics since the drying time is a lot quicker…What do you think?
